Never have experienced this thing, so it took me quite a while to figure it out. I would never go down it or let my kids go down one. Even more now I've read this virtuoso bit of creep.
The idea of working through "bad places" is fascinating, and a very solid way of exploring new zones of dread and anxiety. Fantastic style too.
Thanks Murphy. I thought about going out of the normal swing of things and it’s worked out great so far. I’m still musing on 3 but it’ll come to me. It’s more challenging NOT to think up crazy things at this point.
Shoving ideas in that notebook for revisiting at a later date is a great way to keep focussed and not go too wild with too much stuff at once, I’d say.
Prob’ly most of us have a notebook that looks like something out of Se7en by now.
Actually, I'm an anomaly. All I have is a basic list of words (the stories usually very easy to recall). I'm interested in this notebook, Murph. I'm interested as hell. Do you illustrate along with the writing? Collage?
No mate, the notebook I have is purely scribbles of a verbal nature. The good ones get copied out into files on my PC in different folders depending on the project.
For visual stimulus I make collages of images with music as videos but that's at a later stage of the piece, and not always.
I don't have any gift for drawing so I don't bother with that.
I do also collect visuals, so for example for a thing I'm doing now I have a collection of Otto Dix expressionist portraits. i just copy these from the internet and push them in a folder. They serve as stimulus to character and setting. Before the internet I used to collect images from wherever and cut them out and make big scrapbooks.
Jon T does this too so we've been working together on a piece and getting the images and sounds together is just as important as the plot outline or setting.
Smart EJ because believe it or not, this one was mild compared to what I had in mind for my trip to the water park a month ago. And thank you. It’s been a rough few weeks so I appreciate it!
I couldn’t tell you. BUT some of the harder ones are also the best. Make you dig and work for it until you become a little lighter at the end of it. I’ve had a few of those, as you know. Think you might have one now!
That was super creepy. Now I’m thinking about going down that pipe and…just never coming out. I guess that’s what happens, all evidence to the contrary. Shudder! And I’m claustrophobic, too, so that makes it even worse! Also, I laughed out loud at “ghostbuster doodad”.
Hell yes. This was a wild ride. The prose flows so well and I love the format with the counting.
Thanks Will! Sorry for blowing up on posts; had some stuff to work out on the page!

This felt really good. I could feel you stretching creatively. This makes me want to go write.
Thanks! It came together so easily. Really loving this one. And again, I laughed myself silly so it was worth the trip!
The ones that come together easily are so interesting, right? Why are some stories so tough to crack, while other just...arrives?

I do, but - I'm feeling better about it after our convo!

I laughed myself silly with another line. Such assholes these characters are!
